1. Planner

Every teacher needs a planner—no exceptions. The options can feel overwhelming at first, so start by asking yourself a few questions:
Do you prefer printable or digital?
Do you like to view things daily, weekly, or monthly at a glance?
Horizontal or vertical layout?
You may need to try a few before finding what works best, and honestly, many teachers end up using more than one. That’s okay. Find your system and make it yours. (There’s also a planner style available in the shop tab—click the link to check it out.)

2. Tote Bag

You will absolutely be carrying materials back and forth—papers, supplies, maybe even your lunch (if you remember it). A comfortable, durable tote bag is a must.
These range from budget-friendly to “there goes my paycheck,” so start somewhere in the middle if you can—or go with what your budget allows.
Things to consider:
Cup holder or no?
Multiple pockets for organization or one large space?
Laptop sleeve?
Choose what fits your lifestyle.

3. Organized Space

A functional workspace is everything. Desk organizers, storage bins, and drawer dividers will save you from losing important papers and supplies.
Especially in smaller classrooms, organization isn’t optional—it’s survival. When everything has a place, your day runs smoother.

4. Hand Sanitizer & Cleaning Supplies

Keeping your classroom clean helps reduce the spread of germs—especially during cold and flu season.
Sanitation is your best friend in a room full of kids. Work smarter, not harder: have students wipe their own desks and clean up after themselves. Aim to be the class the janitor brags about.

5. Reusable Water Bottle & Coffee Mug

Staying hydrated and caffeinated is not optional—this is survival gear.

6. Comfortable Shoes and Clothes

You’ll be on your feet most of the day. What you wear directly affects your energy, focus, and patience. Comfort matters more than you think.

7. Emergency Kit (for You)

Keep a small stash of essentials on hand:
Snacks
Medicine
Deodorant
Extra clothes
Long days happen. Being prepared makes them easier to handle.

8. Classroom Management Tools

Whether it’s a clip chart, behavior system, or reward system—have something in place from day one.
Consistency builds structure, and structure builds a calmer classroom.

9. Everyday Classroom Supplies

These are the items you’ll reach for constantly:
Dry erase markers (buy in bulk—they disappear fast)
Pencils
Loose-leaf paper
Sticky notes (great for quick checks and feedback)
Having extras prevents last-minute scrambling before a lesson.

10. Helpful Extras That Make Life Easier

These aren’t always required, but they make a big difference:
Personal laminator – Create reusable materials like flashcards and labels
Portable speaker – Better audio for lessons, transitions, or videos
Document camera or phone stand – Great for modeling and visual learners
Visual timer – Keeps lessons and transitions on track
Anchor chart paper or stand – Supports interactive teaching and long-term visuals
Electric pencil sharpener – Saves time and reduces disruptions
Label maker – Helps students stay independent and organized
Classroom library starter set – Encourages reading from day one
Blue light glasses (optional) – Helpful for long hours of screen time

Starting the school year prepared doesn’t mean having everything perfect—it just means having the right systems and tools in place to support you.
Build as you go, adjust when needed, and give yourself room to grow.
