Congratulations on being a new teacher. What to do next? Here are five pieces of advice, overview tips, and strategies about teaching in the classroom.

Overview
1. Compare teaching philosophies. Remember why you went into teaching.
2. Excel at classroom management first.
3. Approach each day with humility.
4. Allow yourself to be human.
5. Stay a (life long) learner.

1. Compare Philosophies
As best you can, ensure that the school’s philosophy matches yours. (Note: How to write a teaching philosophy is a separate post.) This may seem obvious, but each school has certain nuances that make that school what it is. And those nuances, like in a personal relationship, can turn into pet peeves that can grate on your nerves and/or distract you from your craft.
If this job offer is your only one, and you need the work, obviously take the job! While there, make the most of it – help students, gain experience, learn your trade better, realize what you don’t like, and make yourself more marketable for your next position at your next school.
